Nephrolithiasis and Nature Cure

Treatment of Nephrolithiasis (Kedney Stones)Urinary and reproductive systems are two completely independent system. Though, some activities of both are carried out through one organ. So the diseases of this one organ may affect both the systems. Nephrolithiasis or kidney stones, one of the most painful of the urologic disorders, have beset humans for centuries. Scientists have found evidence of kidney stones in a 7,000-year-old Egyptian mummy. Unfortunately, kidney stones are one of the most common disorders of the urinary tract. Each year, people make almost 3 million visits to health care providers and more than half a million people go to emergency rooms for kidney stone problems.

Tantric science associated these systems with the water element. At Pranic level these are associated with apan vayu. At the extrasensory level, it is believed that their control is associated with the swadhishthan chakra. According to Yoga the swadhislshthan chakra is located at the back in the lumber region. Whenever there is some disorder in water element or apan vayu or swadhisthan chakra these systems contract diseases.

The problem of kidney stones arises when very minute particles in urine slowly begin to accumulate within the kidney. Normally, these minute particles are expelled with the urine in dissolved state. However, due to some disturbance in body metabolish, or due to unbalanced diet or due to excessive stress, these particles begin to accumulate in the form of small or big stones. Usually these stones keep lying inside the kineys quietly without any symptoms. But sometimes they descend down with urine into the urinary tubes (ureters) and get stuck. They bruise the soft tissues of these tubes which results in. the symptoms of unbearable pain, in flammation and blood in the urine.

Types of Stones

The two major types of stones are described here:

Oxalate stones

Calcium oxalate stones account for 90 percent of kidney stone incidence. These types of stones are formed in acidic urine (pH < 6.0), when urine is continuously thick or if there is excess offoods in the diet that are rich in oxalates. Calcium oxalate is common in rhubarb, kiwifruit, agave, tomatoes and spinach, or can also develop in beverages that are stored or brewed in barrels. These types of kidney stones cause about 80 percent of all cases, and also develop due to various metabolic issues.

Calcium or Phosphate stones

These stones are in the form of larger crystals, when urine is alkaline (pH > 7.2) in nature or the calcium metabolism is disturbed then these stones begin to grow quickly. The calcium metabolism can get upset due to some dysfunction of parathyroid gland, or also due to excess consumption of food items in diet that are rich in calcium, like milk. This situation can also arise when someone remains lying on bed for a long time, or in old age when due to dissolution of bones, the amount  of calcium is increased in blood. This calcium gets deposited in kidneys in the form of stones and begins to create problems. Calcium phosphate stones are also associated with urinary tract infection, Renal Tubular Acidosis (RTA) and hyperparathyroidism.

Reasons for the stonesKedney Stones

Primarily, there are two main reasons - the first is disturbance in body metabolism which excessively increases salt percentage in urine. The stones begin to grow when the urine remains thick continuously or with disturbedchemical combination of food items which are rich in protein and increase acidity like maida (very finely ground wheat flour), refined sugar, excess tea, coffee, chemically preserved food, strong and sour spices etc.

When someone consumes too much salt and driks less water, then the urine becomes thick and can lead to stone formation. In addition, in diseases like rheumatism, hyper-calciuria and hyperthyroidism the possibility of stone formation is higher. Chronic diseases like hypertension and diabetes are also some of the reasons. Some medicines like diuretics, calcium related drugs and antacids etc. also promote this disease.

Symptoms

Some diseases of stones lie dormant whithin the kidneys and no symptom of the disease is noticed. The patients with symptoms complain of excessive pain behind the waist, pain like that of a pulled muscle, like something is breaking deep inside, and sharp pain in the abdomen. Sometimes, there is so much pain in the renal  area, that patient begins  to vomit. Passing of blood in urine is also an indication of this disease. The patient may also acquire some infection it the urinary bladder, leading to fever and shivering.

When a slightly bigger stone begins to descend from the kidneys into the urethra (the thin urinary tube), gets stuck and then inches slowly forward, it leads to severe pain. This is called as uretheric colic. This pain begins at the waist and spreads all the way to the reproductive organs. The pain is felt frequently for several hours in a day. The pain begins suddenly and the patient begins to writ he by moving legs up and down and rolling over. Most ot the times, along with the pain, other combined symptoms like vomiting, perspiration and intense urge to urinate can also be observed. Despite the urge, very less quantity of urine gets passed and it could be mixed with blood too. All these symptoms point to presence of stones

Kidney stone & nature cure and blockages in the urinary tract. This condition needs proper medical treatment.

Diagnosis

Clinical diagnosis is usually made on the basis of the location and severity of the pain, which is typically colicky in nature (comes and goes in spasmodic waves). Pain in the back occurs when calculi produce an obstruction in the kidney. Imaging is used to confirm the diagnosis and a number of other tests can undertaken to help establish both the possible cause and consequences of the stone. For diagnosid, x-ray, ultrasound and helical computed Tomography (CT)scans are used, Intravenous pyelogram is also used.

Management

Treatment of Kedney StonesModern treatment

In this disease, a lot of water-drinking is advised, so that due to the pressure of urine, stone descends into the tube on its own, quickly. If the stone is about 4 mm. thick, there is 80 percent chance that it would go through the tube. If it is 5mm. thick, then the chances are 20 percent and if it is 9-10 mm. thick, the treatment is necessary. The treatment is called Lithotripsy, in which the bigger stones are broken into small pieces and flushed through the urine. If the disease is still not cured then surgical intervention may be necessary, but this process is not without danger. It can have side effects and the stones can recur.

The best way to treat kidney stones is Yoga and diet therapy as follows:

Yogic Therapy for kidney Stones

In the severe pain due to big stones, medicines have to be taken and the stones have to be removed by surgery. But to prevent formation of stones again and to remove small old stones or their tiny particled, yogic exercises can be a very effective and worthy process.

1. Surya Namaskara:

Perform one or two rounds as per the capacity.

2. Asana:

Anansas are a very effective method for prevention of formation of stones. Using Asanas blocked Pranic flow can be reactivated in the kidneys and by applying definite pressure there, the flow can be maintained. Asanas that prevent formation of stones and  are very effective are;

a. Tadasana, Tiryak-Tadasana, Kati-Chakrasana, Janu-shirshasana, Shalabhasana, Chakrasana, Ardh-matsyendrasana, Naukasana, Ardhapadma-Paschimottansana, Ardhapadma-Halasana, Merudandasana, Halsasana, Mayurasana, Kurmasana, Dvipadshisasana etc.

b. Trikonasana, Vajrasana, Marjariasana, Vyaghrasana, Supt-Vajrasana, Ushtrasana, Shashank-bhujangasana, etc.

3.Pranayama:Yogic Treatment of Kedney Stones

Pranayama can also prove to be helpful in managing the stones; Nadi shodhana and Bhastrika Pranayama should be carried out with bandhas. Pranayama cures the disesase in an indirect manner and should be done in combination with other groups of asanas.

4.Mudra and Bandha :

Practice of pashini mudra, Yoga mudra, Vajroli-mudra, and helps cure this disease. Mul-bandha and Uddiyana Bandha should also be practiced.

5.Shatkriyas:

Kapalabhati, Agnisar Kriya and Nauli are to be done every day. These practices stop the formation of stones in the kindeys. Laghu shankhprakshalana to be done once a week.

6. Shithilikarana:

kidney stones lead to stress and stress leads to acidity. Acidity causes stones formation in turn. To prevent this, practive Yoga-Nidra and Shavasana so that the disease does not grow.

7. Dhyana:

Meditation is also very essential for prevention of the disease. Ajapa-jap and Nada-Yoga are beneficial.

Food

Taking full, well-balanced and fresh natural food is more beneficial in attaining good health. Fruits, Juices and light boiled vegetables make urine alkaline and stop stone formation. So avoid consumption of acidic foods (Corn, Prunes, Bread, Noodles, Butter, Legumes etc.) and consume more alkaline foods (Carrot, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Apple, green juices, ash gourd, etc.) These acidic foods increase the oxalic acid in the body and that increases the rate of stone formation. Excess of salt makes the urine more viscous as thus, should be minimixed. Drink a lot of water. In summer consume at least 20 glasses a day

Fasting

Fasts are the perfect remedies for all diseases. On the day of fast, drink a lot of water. This reinvigorates the slowed down urinary system and gets drained and cleansed.

Note: All Yogic practices should be commenced under expert guidance. Some of the above mentioned practices should be avoided during acute pain (especially bandhas and few asanas).

Other important remedies

  • Exercise every day, preferably walking.
  • In four glasses of water put one Yavnal (Sorghum Vulgare pers) and lemon grass. Their dissolved juices when consumed daily are beneficial in all kinds of stones. Take half to one gram of shilajit twice a day; it strengthens kidneys and is beneficial in stones.
  • Skin of horse-gram should be soaked overnight in water, and the water should be consumed in the morning.
  • Powder of the roots of horse radish should be soaked in water over night. In the morning filter out the powder and drink the water. Similary, munakka (large raisins) could be soaked overninght and its water could taken in the morning.
