Nature Cure for PCOS

Causes, Completications and Natural Management

Nature Cure for PCOSPolycystic Ovary Syndrome or PCOS is one of the most common endocrine (hormone) disorder. It is a complex disorder that begins during puberty and affects reproductive-age women and is also known as ‘Stein-Leventhal’ syndrome or ‘Functional Ovarian Hyper Androgenism; PCOS is characterized in most but not all cases by multiple small cysts on the ovaries caused by a hormonal imbalance as well as several additional symptoms including irregular menstrual cycles, infertility, weight-gain, and pre-diabetes status. It is related primarily to dysfunction of the metabolic and endocrine systems. With an increasing shift of lifestyle, PCOS is now one of the most common (15-20%) endocrine disorders in women of childbearing age. Although it is a major cause of infertility, its etiology remains unknown and treatment difficult.

What is PCOS?

The European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) define PCOS as the presence of any two of the following criteria:

1.    Polycystic ovaries (either 12 or more follicles measuring 2-9 mm in diameter, or increased overian volume (> 10 cm3) on ultrasound.

2.    Oligomenorrheoa /anovulation (reduced periods/failure to release eggs).

3.    Clinical or biochemical evidence of hyperandrogenism (excessive male hormone.)

Causes and Complications

The actual cause of PCOS is unknown but there are many factors that contribute to PCOS. There is a tendency for polycystic ovary syndrome to be more common in women who have a close relative with the similar condition. The fact that the condition can run in families suggests that there is a genetic component to the disease. Other causes that are thought to be linked with PCOS are metabolic disorders (insulin resistance), hyperandrogenism (elevated levels of the male sex hormones), menstrual irregularities and infertility.

When PCOS is left untreated / poorly treated, the following complications, which are often interconnected, can occur.

  • Diabetes Mellitus (Type 2) or impaired glucose tolerance
  • Cardiovascular disease – especially atherosclerosis (accumulation of plaque in arteries)
  • Metabolic syndrome (elevated blood sugar, increased waist circumference, hypertension etc.)
  • Complications of insulin resistance (fatty-liver, diabetes, obstructive sleep apnoea etc.)
  • Complications related to fertility/pregnancy (infertility, multi-fetal pregnancies, increased risk of complications during pregnancies tec.)
  • Endometrial hyperplasia (thickening f the endometrial lining is a precancerous condition)

Ovarian Cysts and Symptoms of PCOSCauses, Complications and Treatment of PCOS

Due to hormonal imbalance, the ovaries may be enlarged and may contain numerous small cysts located along the outer edge of ovaries. While the presence of cysts on the ovaries does not establish the diagnosis of PCOS and indeed, cysts do not occur in every case of PCOS, they are part of a constellation of sings and symptoms that together make up polycystic ovary syndrome. The most common symptoms that cause significant distress to women suffering from PCOS are:

Absent or irregular periods (up to 90% of women).

  • Amenorrhea (absence of menses)
  • Oligomenorrhea
  • Weight gain and Obesity (up to 70%)
  • Hyperandrogenism-Related symptoms include hirsutism (up to 70% of women), acne (up to 35%), and alopecia (up to 8%).
  • Difficulties in attaining pregnancy.
  • Thinning of scalp hair.
  • Anovulatory infertility (up to 75% of women).

Naturopathic Management of PCOS

Treatment of PCOS in Naturopathy Natural Way

Fasting therapy

Fasting is used as a therapy in the treatment of PCOS. Fasting refers to complete abstinence from food for a particular period and is accompanied with total rest-physical, mental, physiological and sensory. Only water or tender coconut water or lemon water is advised during fasting. By giving physiological rest to the digestive organs, the body draws energy by decomposing and burning unused substances and metabolic wastes with the help of body friendly bacterias and enzymes.

In PCOS, long-term fasting (6-7 days) is advised since short-term fasting (2-3 days) has shown to increase LH (Luteinizing Hormone) levels drastically. Long-term fasting would also lead to reduction of body weight, regular menstrual cycle, control of  hair fall and acne. It also purifies cells all over the body, including those in the brain. Negative mental states such as anxiety and stress are relieved.

Breaking of fast is an equally important process. After a complete water-only regimen, the patient is asked to start with juices. Beneficial juices in this case would be oranges or weet lime, pineapple, carrot, tomato, wheatgrass or durva grass juice. Fasting therapy must be done under the advice and supervision of an experienced Naturopath only

Diet therapy

After breaking of fast, a smoothening diet is advised. Atypical dietary schedule post-fasting, is mentioned below:
