Blood which is flowing in arteries, exerts pressure on the arterial wall, known as blood pressure.

What is hypertension ?

High blood pressure or hypertension means that the person has a systolic and diastolic blood pressure higher than what is considered normal for his age. Person having systolic blood pressure equal or more than 140mm/Hg and diastolic blood pressure equal or more than 90 mm/Hg is kwon as Hypertension.

Types of Hypertension

It is classified in two categories

  1. Essential/Primary Hypertension
  2. Secondary Hypertension

Risk Factors

Following are the risk factors for Essential/Primary hypertension :-

  1. Obesity
  2. Saturated Fat
  3. Alchohol Consumption
  4. Smoking
  5. Less Physical acitivity
  6. Stress
  7. High Salt Intake
  8. Intake of Fast Food

For secondary hypertension, following are the causes :

  1. Any systemic disease
  2. Renal Disease
  3. Endocrine Disease
  4. Drug (contraceptive, NSAID steriod)

Symptoms of Hypertension

Headache, giddiness, sleeplessness, tiredness, breathlessness, tachycardia and heavy chest are the symptoms one may see in Hypertension.

Natural Management


To prevent hazards of hypertension, one actually needs to follow the diet to,

  • Reduce weight
  • Improve the efficacy of heart
  • control High Blood pressure

Change Required

  • Reduce salt intake upto 3gm/day
  • Reduce saturated fat in the diet. It should be less than 10% of the daily energy intake.
  • Sever hypertensive should restrict protein upto 20 gm/day.
  • Three tsp (20ml app.) of oils per day (mufa, pufa) is sufficient.


  • Salt at the table
  • Salted butter and processed cheese.
  • Baked product as bread, cakes, etc.
  • Fruits like lichie, musk melon.
  • Vegetables such as knol-khol, amaranths, field beans, tender red gram.
  • Papad, pickle, sauces, canned food.


  • Breathing exercise
  • Hand in and out stretch breathin
  • Hand up and down breathing
  • Tiger Breathing
  • Full Yogic breathing


Pawanmuktasana, Tadasna, Ardhkatichakrasana, Bhujangasana and Shavasna are helpful.


  • Anulom-Vilom                   (10 Round)

  • Sheetkari                         (10 Round)
